Adapting To Change

So, you were located by an executive search in Toronto, and decided to move from the big city to a piece of Burnaby BC real estate for the job they offered you. Well, that might not be exactly your scenario, but for some reason or other, you have found yourself new to the city. You are surrounded by unfamiliar places or people, and you don't know quite where to start.

Adapting to the changes that come with moving can be one of the most difficult things to do for any individual, or any family. Much as Hollywood makes socializing look easy, most of us have a hard time making connections quickly. It can be very lonely walking around town hoping someone tries to contact you using your roaming SIM card, interested in going out to a movie or for a coffee.

The first place to start the adaptation process will be at work. You will make contacts there with co-workers and even (gasp!) management, and this can be a good way to get started both on the social and places-to-be scene. Look for a few opportunities to make friends at coffee breaks and lunch, without being too aggressive about it. Start out with names and small talk, you'll soon find out who has the potential to be a friend and who does not.

Parents also have some good opportunities for adapting, through other parents at their children's school. Joining a PAC or other such organization is not only a good way to stay abreast of your child's education, it's a great way to meet people. And the best part is, these people will have something in common with you. Before you know it, you will have stopped searching all those Toronto blogs for the latest news in your last city, and instead calling up people you have met to find out the happenings in your new one.

Speaking of blogs, the Internet is an ever present way to become more familiar with your new surroundings. Don't wait to take one before finding out that a taxi in Burnaby costs a lot more than taking a taxi in Toronto. Instead, go online and find out prices before you call. This can be a great way to familiarize yourself with everything, from the best routes through town to the best places to shop for groceries.

Adapting to change in your new location is up to you. The more you are willing to learn and to speak to others, the easier a time you will have. You put in the time when you make your house plans, why not take it to make life plans too?
